The Cyphrenes has arrived from the South with a flaw in her propeller shaft, which was repaired by Fraser and Tinne, but the Government Inspector only sanctioned her going to Kandavu. She loft on Sunday night with 20 Now Zealand passengers. Owing to the break-down of the Colima it is quite uncertain whether she will meet the steamer from Australia at the appointed time. The prospects of the Now Year’s Eaco Meeting are very good; upwards of a dozen horses are located at the Course. Guy Fawkes is the favorite for the Cup. Mr J. M. Clark addressed the electors of City East last night. Ho declared against , Separation, and advocates “ united colony and one purse.” Mr Eggs, the other candidate, speaks to-morrow. k Mr Swanson addresses the electors of Newton to-night. (PGOAI OUH OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Ohinemutu,. Tuesday evening'. Eotorua Lake is at its highest level at present within the memory of the oldest, inhabitant.. There has been continual rain, here for days past. The coaches via Mangarowa have stopped running in consequence of the bad state of the roads in the forest. Several of the Arawa chiefs start to-morrow via Taupo for the nomination meeting at Napier, which takes place there on the 2nd proximo. Mita Hikairo is spoken, of as successor to Karaitiana. The Ngatikahuugimu are spoken of as likely to support him. The natives are almost all busy at their cultivations, and everything is very quiet in. this part ot the district.
(PEOM OUB OWN OOEEESPONDENT.) Gisborne,. Tuesday evening. Mr Wilson addressed a large meeting of electors on Saturday night. Several resolutions wore carried; amongst others that a committee be formed for the purpose of canvassing the district to secure the return of the Poverty Bay candidate for the East Coast, and that subscription lists be opened to defray the expenses of the election. The Government was generally condemned for having closed two existing polling places in the district. Mr Wilson said the Native Minister had' been communicated with, and there is probably a chance of the polling places at Ormond and Tologaßay being re-proclaimed. Sergeant Stanhope, of the Aimed Constabulary, was buried yesterday with Masonic honors., Mr Wylie, an old settler ,died on Sunday. I am afraid Morris and Kelly are stuck. If they do not come by the

McLean and Colenso had the show of hands ; McLean, 79; Colenso, 59; Stuart, 53 ; Eussell, 40; Ferrari!, 11; Buchanan withdrew. Christchurch, Tuesday evening. At the nomination at Kaiapoi the Hon, 0. C. Bowen had 28 and Beswick 46. It is still thought Bowen will be elected by a good majority. Montgomery had the show of hands at Akaroa. Pettiet demanded a poll. A close contest is expected. Nelson, Tuesday evening. At the nomination to-day Curtis and Sharp have been returned unopposed. Dunedin, Tuesday evening. The Dunedin elections took place on Monday. No business is doing, the excitement being intense. The result of the poll was as follows :—Macandrow, 891; Stout, 865; Lomaeli, 843; Reynolds, 476; Maeassey, 409; Fish, 238. Macandrow, Stout, and Lomach wore put forward by tlio Anti-Central League. The difference between Eeynolds and those elected has caused immense surprise. Invercargill, Tuesday evening. Sir DiHon Bell is standing for Malvern. The Bluff Eailway has been successfully altered from tlio broad to the narrow gnage.
PEE PRESS AGENCY, European Cablegrams. Bluff, Tuesday evening. The Aranata arrived yesterday ; she brings the following cablegrams;— London, Nov. 30. The English Government bought in from the Khedive of Egypt all his Suez Canal shares for £4,000,000 cash down. The Khe* dive held 177.000 out of a total of 400,000 shares in the Canal Co. The journals unanimously approve of the purchase, which has caused much agitation in political and financial circles. 30,000 Dundee rail! workers struck against a notice for reduction in the rate of wages. The insurgents of Herzegovina defeated the Turks at Gosclikago. 800 Turks have been killed and 600 wounded. The Times recommends, and the Austrian press opposes an Austrian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Austrian forces on the Turkish frontier have been reinforced. ' Montenegro despatches an envoy to the northern powers to explain to them the difficulty of preserving neutrality. The Span'flh reply to the American note of the 2nd November concedes the legal privileges to American citizens in Cuba, and this amicably settles the Hispano* American difficulty. It is proposed to prosecute the Count Ton Arnim for treason. The Government; intend sending a Special Commissioner to Cairo to examine into Egyptian finance, and to advise the Khedive. The French Press, though regretting the check given to French influence in Egypt, admires the decisive action of England, and considers it unlikely to lead to political conn plications. The German and Austrian Press approve of England’s action in the matter. The opening rates at the wool sales were well maintained. December 3. Sir Julius Vogel sailed in the Somersetshire. Sir Alfred Stephen has been gazetted Governor of New South Wales. Mrs Childers was killed by an inadvertent inhalation of chloroform. The City inundation fund amounts to £14,000.
