TOWN BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Board wne held at the oifico of the Secretary on Thursday the 11th instant. Present; all tho members.

Tlio minutes of the last mooting wore road and confirmed and correspondence approved. The Chairman road a loiter from the Superintendent’s Cilice, Auckland forwarding a correspondence relative to the Pound from the Chairman of tlio District Board to tlio Provincial Secretary and that gentleman's reply thereto, hy which the Trustees of the District Highway were informed that, by the oGth clause of the Act, the Town Board was dearly vested with the sole charge and management of the Pound.

A letter from Messrs Wrigley and Son was read, calling the attention of the Board to the urgent necessity of filling in that portion of Willow-street between Wharf and Spring-street, and to the dangerous condition of the junction of the Dovonport-road and 'Spring-street. The Board adjourned the matter ponding inspection by the members.

Mr Corbett’s application to be allowed to slope oil’ the pathway from his fence to the road by removing the earth from the same was granted. Relative to Captain Tovoy’s application on behalf of himself and others, that a culvert should be placed in Victoria-street for the purpose of carrying of! the water there collected, the Chairman read the Engineer’s report on the subject, and it was resolved that the work should bo proceeded with at once under the supervision of the Engineer. The Chairman suggested that the pathway formed in l)evonport-road from Fourth Avenue to Mr Carthy’s, should be continued past the church between Third and Fourth Avenues. The members of the Board sanctioned the performance of the work. Mr Edgcmnbe presented a petition from a number of ratepayers resident m and about Hamilton-street, requesting that a footpath should bo formed on both sides of Hamilton-street from The Strand to its junction with Wil-low-street.

Mr Edgcumbe drew the attention of the Board to the fact that the street in question was one of tlio main thoroughfares in the town and the principal approach to the Temperance Rail. The Board had expended little or no money in that quarter, and ho trusted that the petition would he favorably entertained. Mr Firth Wrigley proposed that the Engineer be instructed to prepare estimates of the probable cost of terming the pathway, and suggested that if the cost was considered reasonahle> the Chairman and Mr Conway have power to instruct the

Engineer to call for tenders to be submitted at the next Board meeting. Mr Conway seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr Edgcumbe thanked the Board and withdrew. Permission was given to- the Engineer to expend another 30s on Cameron-road. The question of the financial position of the Board was then introduced by the Chairman, who made the following report of the estimated liabilities of the Board as against estimated receipts of £492; —Overdraft, £133; shells, £100; Printing, &c. ; £2O; i Secretary, £36; Engineer, £25; Extra labour, contingencies, &c., £4O; level-stone, and fixing ditto, £6 ; maintenance of Cameron-road, £2O; ditto Devonport-road and Avenue, £10; clearing Third and Fifth Avenue, £8; Fourth Avenue and Elizabeth-street, £11; Devon-port-road pathway, £l4; forming and planting pathway Cameron-road, £25 ; dog kennell, £4 15. A balance of £4O was thus shown to the credit of the Board, and Mr Morris advised that no engagements should be entered into which would necessitate the Board asking for an overdraft of more than £l5O from the Bank. Mr Firth Wrigley considered that no works of magnitude could he undertaken during the present year, especially as the town levels wore not yet completed. Mr Conway asked that all correspondence sent to Mr Watson relative to a road made by him to his bouse be read. Mr Conway’s object in making the request being to see whether any promise had been made to Mr Watson by the Board that he should bo paid for the work done by him. Mr Nonas considered that Mr Watson had boon led astray by communication received from the late Chairman. The Board had never made any promise of payment. It was eventually decided that the Chairman should interview the District Engineer with a view to endeavouring to obtain a grant from Government. A few accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
