PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Your correspondent “New Arrival” deserves the thanks of the ratepayers for calling public attention to the proceedings of the Town Board, and has given expression to a latent but general feeling that the Board are not expending the funds at their disposal in a judicious manner. There appears to be an inertness and want of energy displayed which is to be accounted for, I think, by the absence this year of the late energetic chairman. The whole proceedings of the present Board, since they took office, have been most unsatiefao* tory. For instance, a secretary was advertised for, and several eligible persona offered that services, but the Board instead of accepting one of them, appointed the old secretary again, although ho had publicly advertised that the payment was 100 little for the amount of work to bo performed. Instances might be multiplied, but the first act of the Board is simply a sample of all their other proceedings. Ido not agree with the strong strictures passed on the absent member (who is I understand away on important private business) for be bai always been found on the side of liberal and progressive improvement, and has not gone in for any of the hole and corner work which some other members have been accused of indulging in. If the ventilation of Town Foard matters through your valuable paper causes an improvement my object will have teen attained ; if not lot the ratepayers taka action, and prevent if possible their money from being squandered.—! am, Ac.,. Ratbpayek.
