Correspondence.

PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS. TO THE EDITOR. 9lß,—My attention has been directed to a letter in your last issue signed “NewArrival” on the subject of public improve’ ments. I will first say that the letter bears internal evidence that it is not the production of a new arrival, but rather of “ one of the old and respected inhabitants,” The writer wishes some large public work similar to. that of Wharf street proceeded with, but will he say where the money is to come from, and if it is advisable, even if the Board had funds, to inaugurate any large public works until the permanent levels are fixed, ” New Arrival” trys to be severe about the drainage of Grey street, but will he say because a member of the Board would be bonefittod by a work of thie kind that it ought not to bo done. If the Board during the terra of office cannot benefit themselves to some extent what advantage is it to them being members, I have no doubt “ New Arrival,” were ho a member, would be ai anxious as any one to reap any benefit he could while be held office. I think the present Board are acting rightly in looking after the whole of the district, and' are doing the greatest good for tho greatest number. Hoping they will contizmatlboiir present course of action, and look after fell* byo-ways and back streets that may require it, leaving large public improvements alone until they have attended to the small of tlfifc* town,-—! am, Ac., CONTENTED RATEPAYER.
