PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,- T am a recent arrival here, and am not perhaps competent to give expression to a decided opinion as to any local matters, but in conversation with some of the old and respe. ted inlia! itants, I have beard coim plaints, not loud but deep, about the apathy displayed by the local authorities in the matter of public improvements. The general opinion appears to be that the present highway Board are fi ii! t ring away the money of the ratepayers on paltry and insignificant works, and if they cont inue their pr* sent course there will bo nothing tangible to show at the end of their form of office, it is, no doubt, right that Grey street should be drained, particularly ns it improves the properly of one of the members themselves, who, though absent m person, is present in spirit; also, Cameron Bead requires attention, and no one can “object” to that. But surely it does not require the close attention of our five representatives to mature these schemes. 1 would much prefer seeing them at least make an occasional attempt to emulate the intelligent enterprise of the late Board under the leadership of its able chairman, and produce some such substantia! wcyjks as Wharf Street and The Strand.—l am New Arrival
