The Australasian Sketcher for August to hand last mail is an excellent number. The sketch of liotoinahana Lake and Island, drawn by Mr John Gully, is not only well executed, but truthfully delineated, and this is the greatest compliment we can pay the artist and publishers. _We observe from the European Mail that Lieut.-Colonel Harrington, formerly Inspector of volunteers in Now Zealand, was presented at the late levee, by the First Lord of the Admiralty. On his birthday lately, His Holiness the Pope received upwards of one hundred thousand letters from various parts of the Christian World and above eight hundred telegrams. Mr Goldie announces in another column, that he will b e> happy to tune pianos. This is not Mr Goldie s first visit to Tauranga if we remember correctly. Enoka te Whanake had charge of the boat containing the corpse, and ilori Ngatai with Parira, Hamiora Tu/and Tupaea’s sons were present on the occasion. On the coffin reaching the end of the wharf it was received by Mr Hopkins Clarke, of the Native Office. By the Juries Act, ISGB, at present in force, several classes of persons are exempted from being called upon to servo on juries. During the present session of Parliament Mr Macancfrew the Superintendent of Otago, has introduced a’ bill, entitled an Act to Amend the Juries Act, TSuS, winch, if passed, wid exempt a number of other persons from serving upon juries. The Act at present in force exempts from serving on juries constables, doctors, solicitors in practice, clergymen, &c. ; and by the new bill it is intendedNo exempt all members of fire brigades.
