AtjcklanT), Friday Night. A niABOTJCAti attempt to burn Hobson’s Buildings, Shortland street, was discovered last night. A man was observed to strike a match and Hght something under the door, and then run aw ay. A quantity of paper saturated with kerosene had been forced under the do>rway. It blazed up, but the premises were broken in immediately, and the fire extinguished. There is no clue to the mystery.

In the Provincial Council Mr Bocha, of the Waikato, made a slashing speech, attacking the Native Department, in moving a resolution expressive of the Council’s disapproval of the general conduct of that department. The motion met with expressions of approval from various sides of the House, but was talked out at tho dinner adjournment. The Select Committee reported favourably of the erection of a large building upon the old Supreme Court site. A motion was adopted expressing tho Council’s opinion iu favour of the abolition of imprisonment for debt. The estimates were advanced with but little alteration. It is expected tho Council will adjourn early next week.

Mr Buoksand reports : At the monthly flax sale a small quantity was disposed of at 9s 6d to 17s per cwfc; scoured wool, ILid per lb ; washed fleece. Is 3*-d per !b ; fat cattle, 37s 6d to 33s Gd per 1001 b; sheep, 3fd per lb ; steers, £5 to £5 10s each ; dairy co ws, £9 to £l2 10s each.
