Drs Hoslie and Knyland were immediately called in, and found it necessary to cauterise tho wound, which painful operation through the want, of proper implements, occupied a considerable time. The greatest sympathy is felt throughout tho settlement for Mr Croon who is much respected, ’ , „^ n . alu!rra of fire wa ® raised on Saturday last 16th instant, at 10 o’clock, when it was observed that a stack of wheat at the back of Mr S. Moody’s was ablaze in dangerous proximity to the house. A number of people at once hastened to the spot and there being, fortunately, „ good supply of water, and no wind, tho file was ext inguished before much damage was done. It was «.:»« exhilarating to see with what heariv good will our store keepers and business men “ wired in ” on the water supply question. White shirts were quite at a discount. Winter weather hns now fairly sot in. It has rained here nearly all the week. The maize crop is all gathered, and mostly all dried. Everv fine day large quantities are c »rted in and disposed of to the storekeepers- Altogether the settlers of Opotikl can congratulate themselves noon having had a very successful season. 1 have no police news for you, as usual. We are the most peaceful and law-observing people imaginable. Court cases are quite a raritv, and then generally of tho most trivial nature. *
