THE HONORABLE DONALD MCLEAN.
The Otago Guardian, in speaking of Mr McLean ‘ , .f r Government has been rather lavish of late in conferring honours and decorations upon Australian statesmen. What we ask, were the services of Mr Verdon! Mr Charlea Q-avan Duffy, or U l 1 ,at fc key should bo decorated with the badge of knighthood, compared with those which Mr Donald McLean has rendered to the colony and the Empire during hia long and eminent career in New Zealand ? Ho has succeeded in achieving greater victories than wore won by the Imperial and Colonial armies in the held. He has conquered a lasting peace, reclaimed the Maori people from barbarism: established schools in their villages at which orlv English is taught, settled their intertribal disputes, and diverted them from warlike pursuits into orderly habits of industry. These facts only require to be known at Home, we are convinced, to ensure a fitting recognition by the Imperial Government of one of the most unassuming, and at the same time, one of the ablest and most successful men that has over been en trusted with the management of an aboriginal race.
