COUNTRY BOARD.

A mrhxivo of the members of this Board was hold on Monday morning, at the Court house, to hear appeals _ against ruled, and fur other business. Present: Mr S. Xj. Clarke, chairman ■; Captain Toroy ; Messrs B Lnndom and It. Kirk. Mr Oiarko intimated that ho would withdraw his resignation us chairman of the Board.

Captain Tucks appealed against a rate of 3d per acre being levied on his property, lot 3, North Township Highway District. Alter some consultation it was agreed to reduce the rate to Id per acre.

Mr S. Tj. Clarke appealed against the same rarte being struck upon several sections belonging to him, situate at Judea, &e., and amounting in the aggregate to more than 900 acres.

Mr Clarke said ho appealed entirely upon principle and not as a matter of pounds, shillings, and ponce, The rate was illegally struck. Captain Tovey : It is not illegal. A long conversational discussion then ’ensued, when it was ultimately proposed by Mr London, seconded by Mr H. Kirk, and carried unanimously, that the Board would not entertain Mr Clarke's appeal, but that that gentleman had the usual alternative of still proceeding in the matter by an appeal against the decision of the Board in the Resident Magistrate’s Court,

The subject then dropped. Iho Chairman read a letter received from his Honor the Superintendent of Auckland stating that the amount to bo granted to the Board for the current year would bo £B9 2s. This sum was granted in accordance with a Colonial Highway Board scheme approved of in Council by the Governor.

A letter was read requesting that a certain road closed up by the Hev T. 8. Grace should bo opened up at once. Tho letter was signed by several -of the ratepayers. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Grace requesting him to open tho road fur public traffic forthwith. Tde members then separated.
