A letter was read from the secretary of this Sr‘r 8t f ting tha i' fche commi «ee proposed to hold a Conference of agriculturists, manufacturers, and settlers for the purpose “ of considering S t?«° - pUb i° P ° hcy affectin S their interests" with the view of encouraging and advancing home procmet oas, manufactures, and industries, and the general progress of the colony.” The Conference to taae place on November 13th, at Auckland. 1 he secretary of the League requested the Board would take the proposal into consideration, and inform him whether it would be agreeable to depute a representative or representatives to attend the Conference on their behalf. Mr Norris felt sure that no member of the Board entertained the very peculiar views entertained by the League. He was a strong supporter of free trade, with protection only to colonial industries. The Board were unanimous that it was not desirable to take any part in the Conference. WIIAIiF KEPAIES. Mr Norna suggested that the piles of the wharf should be cleaned from shell fish and tarred between wind and water. This would be a great preservative from decay. A stitch in time m this case would probably bear out the truth of the old adage. He merely brought the matter forward for ventilation. A CACTXOK TO DOGS. Mr Norris said that the dogs had nearly run out of compliance, and on the IBth October another poll tax would be due from ail dogs who wish to sbe'i their co^l. Mr McDonald complained in very strong language that the amount at which he had been assessed wo, unreasonable, but at the same time stated that he was willing to pay the sum levied, lue Chairman called Mr McDonald to order. ari gry discussion hereupon ensued between the Chairman and Mr McDonald, which resulted in the Chairman dissolving the meeting without any business having been transacted. nf’i 2 P ' m> , tl!e Board again met. Present—av c, members exce Pt Mr Norris. Mr Samuels proposed pro forma, “ That the red be accepted, posted for public inspection for one month according to the Act, and that Monday, re ~olh of October bo the dav appointed for hearing any appeals.” Seconded by Mr Conway, and carried. Air Samuels said the ratepayers would bo enabled to appeal against any assessment at the proper time and place—in the first place before the Board, and it not satisfied with the decision, then to the Resident Magistrate at I’auranga. The meeting then adjourned.
