Insurance, £5,000. The distillery was saved with great difficulty, THE GOVERNOR’S VISIT TO WAIKATO. .11 is Excellency the Governor arrived at Ngarua* wahitt on Wednesday evening last. On arrival they were received by Colonel Eyon, Eievitcnant-Coloncl Si , John, Mr Soaraneke, li.M., and a large body of the Armed Constabulary. There was a cons'dorablo number of Europeans present, ami the natives were very enthusiustio in their demonstrations of welcome.' Numerous parties of natives have come in from several distr et , and one large party arrived from the Xvower Waikato in a canoe. A body of Hauhans, between 20 and 30 in number, arrived from Te Kniti and Hungatiki. There were about 7CO friendly natives on the ground, with about SO Hanhaus. His Excellency and party took up their stand opposite King Botatau’s tomb. The different, hapua came up and performed a war-dance with great earnestness. Then then wm-e two valedictory addresses read by the mtft to bis Excellency the Governor. One of Hi ,e addresses was read by tlio well-known friend of the white mar, Mr Andrew Barton; and the other by W iutiora, on behalf of the JNgatinaboi tribe. At the close of the reading of these addresses arose loud and ringing cheers, which were repealed again and again. His Excellency the Governor delivered a most excellent speech in reply, and then introduced Sir George Arney, the Chief Just ice, to the assembled natives, who loudly ch wed him. After tlio Governor’s sj each, the friendly natives arose and delivered sp eh and sang several beautiful vraiatas. Then the Kingites came forward with a curtain, amount of bounce, but were withal very courteous to his Excellency, mid gn.ro utterance to various expressions of good feeling to his Excellency individually. Other liaubauH addressed the Governor, and each ended his address by laying a mat at the foot of the Governor. The general tone of the addresses was very satisfactory. Afterwards the residents of the district presented a hire well address to his Excellency. Altogether the meeting was eminently successful.
