Found Faulty Concrete In Cells In Victorian Camp

Four German prisoners of war who escaped recently from a camp in Victoria broke out of concrete detention cells situated outside the perimeter fcnce of the camp after they had discovered faults in the concrete. This was revealed by the iMinister for the Army, Mr. Forde who added that all the escapees had been recaptured. The fifth prisoner in the cells was caught in the act of escaping. . After finding faults in the concrete the Germans had made a hole larce enough for them to get out. The building of the cells had been constructed by private contract. Mr Forde said that important action in 'guarding prisoners was being taken, but details could not be PU Since GC the arrival of prisoners of war in Australia 12 Germans had escaped and ten had been recaptured. Nine Italians had escaped and eight had been recaptured. In the light of experience in other countries at war the .number of escapes of prisoners in Australia was extremely small.
