NORTHERN XV. THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET

Like knights of old. the soldiers "Up North" are eager for a tilt at the championship, and in this instance it happens to be the Rugby sunremacy of the province. The Auckland Union's XV has beaten New Zealand Tank Brigade 23 —11 and Waikato 26—8, and as the soldiers in the last-named district beat the W.R.F.U.s representatives 16 —3 at Hamilton a fortnight ago. there appears to be no further menace to Auckland from the South. Hence that fine player of the near-past. Sergeant C. E. Cammick. has entered the arena with a team composed mostly of the younger generation. This Northern Army side to do battle at Eden Park next Saturday is not without merit. Several of its members played for Waikato against Auckland last week, and Armitage is a New Zealand Universities' representative. The side is:—

Backs: M. H. Campbell: P. W. Kelly. R. J. Clark, W. J. Welch, R. W. Bayliss. W. B. Davis, D. A. Barchard (former Marist half). Forwards: J. C. Clough (captain). J. G. Pring (hooker). J. M. Taylor, T. G. Flannisan. R. A. Armitage, J. G. Simpson. G. H. Terry. D. L. Christian.

Ca*imick's old club mate. 7. W. Lucas. is not underrating the opposition, and has called upon the following men to go into action against next Saturday's invaders: —
