RUBBER SUPPLY
NEW ALLIED SOURCES
Development In South America
And Belgian Congo
British Official Wireless Rec. 12.30 p.m. RUGBY, July 29. Answering questions about supplies of rubber from overseas, Mr Oliver Lyttelton, Minister of Production, replied that an agreement had been reached with the Belgian Colonial Ministry, under which the British Government would purchase the rubber output of the Belgian Congo at a price calculated to bring forward the maximum quantities available.
The Belgian authorities had established a commission to stimulate the production, planting and gathering of wild rubber. Steps had been taken to reopen abandoned plantations and transfer labour from Jess essential and public works for the collection of wild rubber.
The production of rubber in Brazil and Bolivia was being dealt with by the United States Government, which had concluded an agreement to spend 5,000,000 dollars on developing rubber in the Amazon basin. They would send a mission to develop the resources there and buy all Brazil's exportable surplus. The United States was also buying the total production of Bolivian rubber.
