Aged 31, Lieutenant-Colonel Lynch was born at Waihi and was educated at Waihi High School and Sacred Heart College. He took an interest in military work while he was at school and on leaving Sacred Heart College continued with the Territorials. He left for overseas as a captain and won the Military Cross in Crete.
