Garcia Draws With Rayner In A Catch Weight Boxing Bout
The fourth carnival of the season staged by the Auckland Boxing Association at the Town Hall last evening was a decided success. There was a capacity attendance. The amateur section of the programme, with United Nations' reprssentatives competing, produced keen and even contests, and the professional .-atchweight match between Johnny Garcia (United Nations; and Clarrie Kayner (Blenheim) went the full journey of 10 rounds. The result was a draw, and it was a fair reflection of the boxing merits ot the two men. Garcia came to the Auckland ring with the reputation of being a fast and clever two-handed boxer. He has youth on his side and a ring speed which gnve him a decided advantage. In the New Zealander he met a boxer much older in 9 ne wiLh great ringcrait, a wonderful defence and a marked capacity to both take and give punishment. He took the ring at 9st lljlb and Rayner weighed in at 9st 91b. Different Methods Contrast In style was evident as soon as the opening round started. Garcia at once showed a wide range of shots, using the rip cleverly and hooking fast at his opponent's head with both hands. Rayner boxed cautiously, and with hard hitting in reply made it an even round. By the second round both had settled down to their respective methods, Garcia forcing the pace and carrying the fight to his opponent. In the fifth round Rayner slowed Garcia with two hard straight rights to the body, and the following round was even going. The Best Three Minutes The seventh round was an all-out affair at whirlwind speed, and the spectators cheered both men all the way. Both landed several hooks, and they were fighting hard on the ropes at the gong. Garcia's superior ring-speed and greater variety ol' shots showed up in the two following rounds. In the final round Garcia went all out to try and force a decision, but as was the case in the earlier rounds, he found Rayner's defence and clever evasion a hard barrier to get through, and in the in-fighting the New Zealander came back gamely and was going strongly at the final gong. The decision got a good reception, the fine showing that the two men had put up being recognised and appreciated. The referee was Mr. J. H. Sloan and the judges Messrs. J. H. Keenan and G. Bush. Amateur Contests Paper-weight: B. Jones (Hamilton), 6st 01b, beat O. Neill, 6st 71b, on points-Bantam-weight: G. Broadhurst, Bst 01b, drew with H. Gordon, 7st 61b, after a fast and even contest. It was a popular decision. Coins were showered into the ring at the end, and one ringside supporter contributed a £5 note to be divided. Catch-weight: D. Tait, list 121b, beat R. Scott, list (Jib, the bout being stopped in the second round. K. Black, 9st BJlb. beat Young Moe Williams (United Nations), 9st 131b, the bout being stopped at the end of the third round. Black took a lot of punishment in the first round and was down for seven. He fought back strongly over the next two rounds, and at the end of the third Young Moe Williams went back to his corner with a badly damaged face and could not continue. Black, with hard hitting, had the better of the last round, and the United Nations' man was tiring. Middle-weight: T. Brown, list 41b, knocked out Dicky Boy Hunter (United Nations), list olb, in the second round. Dickey Boy Hunter opened with hard hitting, and in the first round Brown was down for seven. He staged a big recovery in the second round, and went right through his opponent's defence with a series of left hooks which ended the bout. The referee for the amateur bouts was Mr. H. Brien and the judges .Messrs. J. H. Keenan and E. Armishaw. The official announcer was Mr. W. E. Dervan and timekeepers Messrs. C. Cowan and J. K. Douglas.
