RED CROSS WORK
AUCKLAND SUB-CENTRE
The Red Cross Society was not a war organisation, said Canon R. G. Coats when presiding at the annual meeting of the Auckland City Sub-Centre of the society last evening. He pointed out that it was the strict observance of this fact which protected the personnel in the event of their coming into contact with the enemy. He referred to the considerable growth of the society and thanked all who had co-operated in its work during the past year.
Reviewing the annual report, Mr. G. T. Paterson said the sub-centre was now able to more than pay its way. Thousands of certificates had been issued to school children who had been given training in first-aid, home nursing and hygiene. The treasurer, Mr. A. K. Fenwick, said the Victoria League had aided the Red Cross funds to the extent of nearly £900, and well over £150 had been raised through the efforts of the entertainment committee.
Medallions in first-aid or home nursing, it was stated, had been won by Mesdames F. Meßride, E. Sharley, J. Brown, W. Kruse, and L. Taylor, and Misses D. Lake and E. M. Frost.
The following officers were elected: President, Canon R. G. Coats; vicepresidents, Lady Davis. Mesdames S. Austin Carr, J. W. Sharman, P. J. North, J. B. Macfarlane and Miss C. J. Murray; chairman, Mr. G. T. Paterson.
