MILK DELIVERY
daylight difficulties
A suggestion that the present manpower difficulties in city and suburban milk deliveries might be eased if a number of small users handy to shops wefe cut out of the round, was made by Mr. H. P. Burton at the Auckland Milk Council last night. These small users could then obtain their requirements from shops. Some action of this sort was already being taken in the delivery of bread.
In reply to an objection from Miss Melville that this would react against elderly small users and that milk would not keep for an extra day or so, as would bread, Mr. Burton said he had been informed by many of these small shops that already from 60 to 70 per cent of their customers for milk and bread were elderly folk, and he suggested that it was people like these in close touch with the public, who were in the best position to know the facts. Mr. R. B. Stonex said it was impossible to carry out the proposed front gate delivery in daylight within the hours to which they at present were restricted by the Minister of Labour. Miss Melville: Our first line of attack then is surely the Minister of Labour, and I understand he is at present in Auckland. The council finally decided to wire the Minister for Manpower urging a reply to the board's previous representations which were on similar lines.
