VERDICT FOR DEFENDANT

The damages claim, Arthur George Smith, waterside worker (Mr. Sullivan) v. Union Steam. Ship Co., Ltd. (Mr. Hamer), arising out of an accident when a timbea- cargo was being discharged and plaintiff, acting as hatchman, was injured, was concluded yesterday after a hearing of five days. Plaintiff claimed £750 general and £224 special damages. The jury found that the accident was not caused by negligence of the defendant company's servants, and that the plaintiff could not by due care have prevented Hie timber from falling and escaped injury. If the plaintiff had been entitled to any damages . the jury assessed the amount at £200.

Mr. Hamer mowd for judgment and Mr. Justice Gallan allowed Mr Sullivan 14 days in which to con sider moving for'- a new trial.
