LATE MR. C. V. HOUGHTON

CITIZENS PAY TRIBUTE

At the funeral of the late Mr. C. V. Houghton, which took place yesterday afternoon, the business community, with which he had many associations, was represented by a large number of prominent citizens. Before the cortege left for the crematorium at Waikumete Cemetery, a service was conducted by the Rev. D. N. McDiarmid at the residence of the late Mr. Houghton, 24, Gladstone Road, Parnell.

Representing the New Zealand Shipping Company were the traffic manager in Wellington, Mr. A. H. Sinel, Mr. F. H. Gifford, local manager, Mr. W. A. Moor, assistant local manager, and several older members of the staff who had worked under Mr. Houghton. The New Zealand Insurance Company, Ltd., was represented by Mr. C. I. Nathan, deputy-chairman of directors, Sir James Gunson and Mr. Oliver Nicholson, directors, Mr. A. I. Johns, general manager, Mr. T. C. Buddie, Auckland manager, and Mr. R. King, manager of the trustee, executor and agency branch. The South British Insurance Company, Ltd., was represented by Mr. V. J. Larner, chairman of directors, Mr. S. Austin Carr, director, and Mr. J. Morton, general manager. Representing the Auckland Harbour Board, of which Mr. Houghton was a member for six years, were Mr. H. Luke, chairman, Mr. W. B. Smith, secretary, Mr. D. Holderness, superintendent, and Captain H. H. Sergeant, harbourmaster. The Union Oil, Soap and Candle Company, Ltd., was represented by the chairman of directors, Mr. G. R. Hutchinson, and a director, Mr. David L. Nathan. On behalf of the Kauri Timber Company, Ltd., and the timber industry in general, the managing director, Mr. G. Trippner, attended. The Ley land-O'Brien Timber Company, of which Mr. Houghton was chairman, was represented by Mr. S. H. Leyland, managing director, and Mr. J. B. Lusk, secretary.

Captain R. S. Lewis, of the Shaw Savill and Albion Line and chairman of the Shipping Association, and Mr. W. R. Smith, Lloyd's surveyor, attended. Representing the Anglican Church were Dean W. Fancourt and the Rev. H. K. Vickery, port chaplain.
