WATERSIDER'S CLAIM

Evidence in the retrial of a claim against the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd. (Mr. Hamer), by Arthur George Smith; waterside worker (Mr. Sullivan), was concluded in the Supreme Court to-day after a hearing of five days, before Mr. Justice Callan and a jury. Plaintiff was struck by a piece of timber that fell from a sling when he was acting as a hatchman in the discharge of a ship last April, and suffered injuries. He claimed £750 general and £224 special damages, alleging negligence on the part of the company's servants in method and working. Defendant denied such negligence and alleged that negligence by the plaintiff contributed to the accident.

The jury retired this afternoon to consider its findings.
