BRITISH YOUTH

GIVING AID IN WAR EFFORT

Rec. 9.30 a.m

LONDON, July 23

Broadcasting to India, the President of the Board of Education, Mr. R. A. Butler, spoke of the way in which the youth of Britain were being enabled to help in the war effort and prepare themselves for full citizenship. The trail had been blazed by voluntary organisations and up and down the country groups had shown a desire to serve, a desire that had been stimulated by direct attack on their homes.

There was such a great response to the formation of the Air Training Corps that it had been decided to increase the establishment of Army and Sea Cadets and encourage boys and girls to serve in other organisations, including land work. "We are well on the way to establishing a new education service to tide over the time between compulsory schooling and the beginning of full life citizenship," Mr. Butler said. He added that the aim was to provide an infinite variety of ways of national service and avoid the regimentation of the totalitarian countries.
