ON THE GREENS

SOLDIERS' TOURNEY

RAIN MARS TROPHY MATCHES (By TRUNDLER) It may surprise a good many of the competitors in the annual R.S.A. tourney last Saturday to know that three of the players are veterans of the Boer War. These are T. W. Christey, playing in Waterman's Takapuna rink, which won the tournament last time; J. C. Yeo, a member of Loram's Rocky Nook team; and W. A. Cadwallader, who entered an Edendale side. The last-named did not qualify, but the other two rinks won their sections, so they will be seen in action again next Saturday, if the weather is reasonably fine. As Ave teams qualified for post-section play on the Onehunga green next Saturday, a draw has been made. B. Long (R.S.A.) will meet E. W. Early (R.S.A.) in the eliminating round at one o'clock. At two o'clock the loser can join in a local game, while the winner meets Waterman, and In the other semi-final Loram will meet J. Bradley (R.S.A.). There are at least three other wellknown bowlers who wore khaki uniform in the Boer War. R. Sheath (Remuera), J. S. Montgomerie (Mangere) and F. L. Vaughan (Carlton). There was no game in the Diggers' Badges on Saturday, as the half-dozen challengers were playing in the R.S.A. tournament. On the first fine Saturday the Devonport holders will meet a challenge from H. Collins (Takapuna) on the Takapuna green. Next on the list are R. V. Woolf (Onehunga R.S.A.) and J. Gifford (Balmoral).

The Mangere challengers for the Edwin Stars attended at Ponsonby, but before long the drizzling rain developed into a heavy downpour, and the game was abandoned. The players will bear in mind that rule 7 governs the future procedure. A full game of 21 ends is to be played, ignoring last Saturday's score. Following Mangere, the next to challenge are C. M. Culpin (Rawhiti) and A. E. Harland (Mount Eden).

T. G. Harriman went to Onehunga for the Denison Pins, accompanied by R. Thomas, E. Lardner and H. C. Keegan, but the weather was steadily becoming worse, so the match will be played on the first fine Saturday, with H. Whittle (Grey Lynn) to challenge the winner, followed by F. Dyson (Hallyburton Johnstone). The Jordan Pins match was also marred by increasing rain, and long before the normal finish the visiting skip shook hands, leaving the trophies at Ellerslie, with no score recorded: P. A. Lewis, G. Bevin, L. Corby, E. J. Mitchell (Ellerslie) holder, v. W. Gardiner, A. Crow, S. E. Harper, J. Gardiner (Otahuhu) challenger. Next to challenge are E. G. Jeffrey (Transport) and S. McMahon (St. Helier's). There was no game for the Hadwin Pins, so Carlton will challenge the Remuera holder on the first fine Saturday, followed by Balmoral.
