LITTER OF BOTTLES

WHARF TO BE CLOSED

VANDALISM AT WHANGAREI (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. In consequence of serious weekend vandalism, the Whangarei Harbour Board to-day adopted a recommendation by its engineer for the wartime closure of the railway wharf to the public. Damage reported by the engineer included the rolling rf heavy iron dredging pipes stowed on the reclamation into the harbour, cutting a crane tripping rope with an axe breaking into the tool locker, telephone booth and storeroom and scattering the contents about the wharf and throwing timber into the soft mud. Bottles which were left littering the wharf testified that the intruders were adults. The chairman commented that the report made fine reading in a lawabiding community. It was decided to place the matter officially in the hands of the police.
