RAT WEEK
SCHEME MODIFIED A large-scale campaign against rats will not be held in Auckland at present as the City Council has been unable to secure a sufficiency of suitable poison for free distribution. The position is further complicated because few rat traps are procurable. Some idea as to what this rat repression work entails may be gathered from the fact that during the twelve months ended March 31 last, 25,836 traps were set in 8200 premises and 7723 rats were caught and delivered for bacteriological examination. Over 313,000 poison baits were prepared and put up into 26,000 packages and supplied to approximately 6000 persons through the sanitary department's office. In spite of difficulties, however, the City Council authorities feel that a modified campaign might, in view of apparent apathy, awaken members of the public to a sense of their responsibilities in checking the I". a . va j?® s of these rodents.
