MEMORIAL PARK ADDITION

Appreciation of the action of Mr. W. Goodfellow in proposing to donate an area of 174 acres, with dwelling, at Mountain Road, Henderson, to form part of the Centennial Memorial Park, was expressed at the annual meeting of the board yesterday.

The hon. secretary, Mr. A. D. Mead, in a report, said that the area was covered with magnificent bush, with some very fine specimen kauris, and was attractively laid out with paths. Mr. Goodfellow had offered to donate the area, subject to the board entering into a covenant assuring the free use of the area to the public as a park, binding the board to take all reasonable precautions to prevent damage by fire or removal of trees or shrubs, and to employ a caretaker on public holidays or as required to comply with the conditions.

Mr. Goodfellow had offered to supply and erect a suitable memorial tablet. He desired the board to convert the cottage into a tearoom and have the unformed road at the rear of the cottage made into a parking area and connected with the public road.

Mr. Mead considered that the cottage could be altered at moderate expense. A portion of it could be used as the private residence of a ranger and another portion as a refreshment lounge. He recommended that the terms be accepted, and the matter referred jointly to he solicitors of the board and donor to prepare a suitable deed. On the motion of the chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, the report by Mr. Mead was adopted, and it was decided to place on record appreciation of Mr. Goodfellow's generous gift.
