FURTHER STEPS LIKELY PETITION BEING PREPARED connection with the Mareo case, it is believed that a petition praying that consideration be given to the case (Df Eric Mareo, who has been m prison since his death sentence was commuted in 1936, will shortly be presented to the Government. £ °r some time past the petition has been in course of preparation. When the article dealing with the case which appeared in Saturday's Star was mentioned to Air. Humphrey O'Leary, K.C., in Wellington yesterday, he said that certain steps were being taken. However, he was not at liberty to disclose what they were. Mr. O'Leary was senior counsel for Mareo during both his trials ln m , e Supreme Court in Auckland. The Minister of Justice, Mr. Mason, stated in Wellington yesterday that he had received a copy of the late Sir William Willcox's report on a review of the evidence relating to the death of Mrs. Mareo. An application in respect of this report was expected from Mareo's solicitor. In view of that fact, added Mr. Mason consideration of the matter was in abeyance.
