FAILURE TO REGISTER
FATHER AND SOX FIXED (0.C.) TE AROHA, this day. '"Men must enrol for service; there are constitutional provisions of this kind and defendants must comply with the lsw," said Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Te Aroha Magistrates Court, when Nikola Daniel Sorich, aged 18 years, and Anton Sorich, his father, pleaded guilty to the failure of the former to register for national service. Mr. Burns, for defendants, said responsibility for Nikola Sorich's offence was taken by his father, who had strong objections to anv of his sons serving. He had lost two brothers in the last war. a brother and a brother-in-law in this war, and a brother and sister had also been killed during an air raid on Belgrade. He had other relatives and property in Yugoslavia and he feared that if his sons entered the services that reprisals would be made on those relatives.
Both defendants were convicted, Nikola being fined £2, while his father. Anton Sorich, was fined £10 and costs.
