"THOROUGHLY FIT"
SGT. HINTOX, V.C., RECOVERS Rec. 1 p.m. LONDON, July 17. Sergeant J. D. Hinton, V.C., has written to a cousin in London from a German prison camp, advising that he has completely recovered from his wounds and is thoroughly fit. Sergeant Hinton was one of the three New Zealand heroes to be awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in Greece and Crete, the other two being Sergeant Hulme and 2nd-Lieutenant Upham. His battalion was cut off during the last stages of the withdrawal from Greece, but he refused to accept defeat and led his men into the attack again. Little was known of the heroic action at the time, but news of it filtered through British Army sources. After Mr. Jordan, the New Zealand High Commissioner, had sent two pieces of the V.C. ribbon to Sergeant Hinton, he received the following message from him: "You have no idea of how thrilled I was when your letter arrived. I was in hospital in Germany for seven weeks after a long stay in Greece. I was wounded in the stomach, but the wounds have healed."
