BARNARDO HOMES
DISPLAY OF GIFTS EXTRA WAR WORK Another display afternoon was held for Dr. Barnardo's Homes at the home of Mrs. E. A. Leighton, Seaview Road, Remuera. As usual, there was a large table full of clothing from Christchurch. The big piles of babies' woollies called for much admiration. Other tables were full of every description of useful and warm clothing. Also there were many lovely toys and the walls were covered with a great variety of quilts, coats, costumes and dresses which have been sent in from all parts of New Zealand. These great homes are doing wonderful war work. In addition to their usual large family of 8200 children, they have added a considerable number of children of men in the Services and are rendering a fine service in this time of war.
One of the guests offered for sale for the homes an original number of the Auckland Times, printed in 1842.
It was stated by Mrs. Leighton that since war began she had dispatched about 10,000 garments to the homes and a considerable sum of money.
