HOSPITAL ANAESTHETICS
Declaring to be absolutely without foundation the accusation made by the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board. Mr. Allan J. Moody, at the last meeting, that the standard of anaesthesia in Auckland was low, the executive committee of the hospital medical staff submitted the following statement:—Of the 16 cases quoted by Mr. Moody as having died in the ,theatre during the past two 2i atl no Keneral anaesthetic. Of the remaining 11, two were cases in extremis, operations being undertaken as a last resource. Four ca . s ?u , we , re recognised bad risks and their death was not unexpected. It was well recognised that anaesthesia carried a risk in all cases even in healthy individuals. All these j £ een thoroughly investi.ua ln n .° case w as it found that the anaesthetic had been other than skilfully given. During the unfler review there were over 28.000 anaesthetics given, and the record of the hospital compared favourably with that of any comparable institution.
