Ponsonby Takes The Edwin Stars From Te Papapa Quartet

(By TRUNDLER)

The highlight in the play for the five sets of inter-club challenge matches on Saturday was the success of four of the holding teams. The Edwin Stars were the only trophies to change hands, and these fell to McClymont (Ponsonby), who tilled the breach at short notice when the next on tlle list intimated that he could not make up a team. The visitors were rewarded with a fine game, on a green entirely to their liking, and at one stage they were leading by ? ,*, The holders evened the score at 16 all on the 17th end, but their opponents did all the rest of the scoring to win by eight: M. Dick, F. W. OatesT E. Jury, T. A. McClymont (Ponsonby), challengers, 24, v. F. J. Morris, J. Bradley, A. L. Moon, S. J. Moore (Te Papapa) 16. None could fail to notice the neat delivery of McClymont. His execution is of equally high class, and the adjacent players were all attention when he nomone apparently impossible shot. The drive and the draw were both blocked, but he played a swinging fast run through a narrow port and picked out the shot bowl, lying alongside the lhe applause of even his opponents. _ J- A. Granger's Mangere rink should find the Ponsonby green In perfect order ?. n Saturday.and next on the list are C M. Culpin (RawhlU) and A. E. Harlaad (Mount Eden).

The Denlson Pins were successfully defended, although it was anybody's game until the holders won two fours in succession, the final score being: K. Laing, L. G. Grace, H. A. Robertson, F. Livingstone (Onehunga) 25, v. J. Goodlson, A. Gubb, C. S. Wallace, T. J. Buchan (Kpsom), challengers, 20. Victory By 31 Points Ellerslie put up an unusual record in defending the Jordan Pins, the margin being the largest noticed in a challenge match for many years, the score being: P. A. Lewis, G. Bevin. L. Corby, E. J. Mitchell 38. v. T. C. Turnbull, K. E. Bell. C. O. West, S. Vella (Onehunga), challengers, 7. There seems to be no explanation except that the holders were at the very top of their form and "had the wind with them when there was anything doing." Next to challenge are S. E. Harper (Otahuhu) and E. G. Jeffrey (Transport). The Had win Pins produced another fine game, the Auckland visitors securing four on the first end. Remuera returned the compliment on the second, then established a lead which was not overtaken until Auckland reached 16 to 15 on the 15th end and 18 to 17 on the 17th. Singles to Remuera put them ahead by the 19th, and White lay two beauties on the 20th, of which Innes saved only one. A Desperate Finish As a tie is no good to the challengers. Innes was left with the problem of getting three for a win, so when Remuera lay shot he killed the lead. On the replay Andrews lay two shots and Innes came into the lead, but when the scatter settled he could only score one. The final result was: W. N. Abbott, R. G. Rainger, M. D. White, C. H. Andrews (Remuera) 20, v. A. W. White, J. Hedley, W. Robins, B. Innes (Auckland), challengers, 19. Under the scheme of regular rotation between the central clubs, the next to challenge will be Carlton. There was a neck-and-neck contest for the Diggers' Badges, played on the Takapuna green, and both sides enjoyed it, especially the close finish. Edendale were leading by 17 to 16 with two ends to go, but Mason was drawing well and turned the scale in time to win: D. Tainsh, R. Worthington, W. Leather, T. Mason (Devonport) 20, v. \V. McLoughen, W. A. Cadwallader, W. Tnmulty, G. Greenwood (Edendale). challengers, 19.
