ESSENTIAL WORK
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. To ensure that preference will be given to lab9ur for this class of work and to retain the services of those already engaged in it, earthquake repair work has been declared an essential industry. In view of the thPrZ, earthquake restoration, the Commissioner of Defence Construction, Mr. James Fletcher ha<? decided that work may continue during all daylight hours, including Sundays. Rates of pav will be in accordance with the Defence Works Labour Suspension Order. „ T *} e May°r of Wellington, Mr T » • c?? slop ' has written to the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, asking for his urgent attention to the sity of providing labour to carry out essential repairs of earthquake damage^ll6 city. Mr. Hislop said that to do the work in a reasonable time required at least 300 men, whereas there were now 100 available.
