CONVOY OR PATROLS

Question Under Consideration In United States U-BOAT ATTACKS DIMINISH Rec. 2 p.m. NEW YORK, July 14. Rear-Admiral Kauffman, Commanrie Gulf Sea Frontier, said that submarine attacks in the Gulf area are diminishing and the question of convoys is under study. "We are endeavouring to use every ship we can lay our hands on," he added. We won't say that convoys will be ordered for all the Gulf shipping, i nis is a debatable question, convoys v. patrols, depending on such factors as the speed of ships and the length of time escort ships are tied up." The Navy Department has announced that a medium-sized United States merchantman torpedoed in the Caribbean several weeks ago did not sink and later reached a United States port. There were no casualties. The crew said the U-boat was outwitted by the merchant skipper, who shifted ballast to the port side and poured oil on the fires to improvise a smoke screen. He zig-zagged and dodged through reefs and then limped safely to port, although the hole in the side was large enough to drive a tank through.
