The Great Northern Double, 1042, was won ana lost at the Auckland Racing Clubs winter carnival at Ellerslle on Saturday; and although high praise is ue to Erndale for his brilliant victory Success' H in r lh»' ?," d \° P ozie B °y *<>r his success in the steeplechase, it is a fact that Fortune was on their side—particularly in the case of Dozie Boy. fel^lV 11 ,'hf f* ce P"°n of Tidewaiter, who u third fence, the jumping by in hp 7 , the . steeplechase left little wh»n ,hi ilred d " rm S Ule first round, but tho i J ci ucial stages were entered upon ha?l ™i', n °H ra £ ln S or mishaps in running anvth the "umber of those witn suitpw tr! f reasonable prospects of success to four. Once the pair was over this, Dozie Boy outstayed his opponent to win well, while old Ennaon valiantly to get third Rider's Fine Form Of course, an essential part of the (011 tract of a steepleciia.s'j is iue and therefore all the hunour-^orZS all ot them—are due to Dozie Boy, but it is beyond dispute that the connections and supporters of Chat and Clansman were unlucky that their representatives should come 10 grief after jumping perfectly lor over three miles. Apropos the qualification in the honours list, it is only necessary to point out that Ashley Jenkins, rider of Dozie Boy, has never been seen to better advantage in the saddle, and that is praise indeed, lor lie has ridden many winners in his day, including a jumping treble on Satur-<lay—-the Green Lane Steeplechase on Mr. Jas. Bull 3 Brandon Hail, the Hunt Club Hurdles on Mr. C. W. Merrylees' Golden Memory, and the Northern 'Chase. Dozie Boy, an aged gelding by Lucullus trom Prosy, showed considerable promise last season, but failed to negotiate an easy jump in the last Northern while !'2 C '"L K extremely well a few furlongs from the finish. He repeated the mistake next day, and finished the season by running second to Astral Flame in the Grand national Steeplechase. Dozie Boy has done well this season for his owner, Mr. H. S. Hathbone, a Hawke's Bay sportsman. for his wins comprise a hurdle race at Hastings and the Te Rapa Steeples last Saturday week. Triumph for Erndale The Great Northern Hurdle Race resulted in a clear-cut victory for the Wai-kato-owned Erndale, which was defeated in two recently run hurdle events, his only starts over obstacles. In neither instance referred to was Erndale disgraced, as he succeeded in securing minor placings, and was running on solidly at the end of both engagements. At the Egmont meeting at Hawera on May 10 Erndale finished third to the wellhandicapped Besiege and Colibri in the Tongahoe Hurdles, and, a week later, was second to Evan's Head (another particularly smart hurdler) in the Seddon Hack Hurdles at Te Rapa. These two races were run over a mile and a half journey, whereas the Great Northern Hurdles was decided ovw two miles and a half. Consistent Winner on Flat In his race in the Northern, Erndale showed marked improvement. He ran into second place behind Lapidarian before half the journey had been covered, and took the lead without much effort when lapidarian commenced to tire at the three-furlong post. He was going nicely at the final fence, where Hessketoon, hardridden and now only a bare length in the rear, challenged strongly.
Erndale made a splendid jump, but Hessketoon hit heavily and bit the earth instead of beinp assured of second place. This left Erndale to run in an easy winner from Streamline, which ran past beaten horses, one of them the favourite, Kanui Te Pai, which was checked and pulled to one side to avoid the fallen Hessketoon.
Erndale is raced by Mr. A. W. Ebbett, and he has done exceedingly well for the Hamilton owner since the commencement of the season. His wins inc'ude four handicaps over middle distances.
TRAINING HONOURS The Hawke's Bay trainer G. W. B. Greene had a field day at Ellerslie, winning three events. He commenced well by taking the opening event on the programme, the First Jervois Handicap, v.-ith Mr. C. T. Keeble's Phaleron bay colt Greek Dancer, and, after adding the Great Northern Steeplechase to his list, he weighed out Golden Memory to achieve an end to end win in the Hunt Club Hurdles i'or Mr. O. W. Merrylees. HEAVY WAGERING Investors opened their pursestrings on Auckland's opening day, and a check after the final race shenved investments totalling £110,853 10/. which represented an increase of £4570 on betting for the corresponding day last year.
