QUIET HOLIDAY

LACK OF STREET BUSTLE

For the first time for many the occasion of the Sovereign's birthday in Auckland was not marked today by the holding of a race meeting or by other open-air sporting activities of any importance. This fact, taken in conjunction with the consideration that the season for beach and picnic excursions is past, resulted in an unusually quiet holiday. Citizens for the most part took advantage of a pleasurable clearing of the weather to spend the morning at home in the garden and the afternoon at indoor entertainments. The exceptions were provided by those addicted to tennis, bowling and golf, to whom the fine day came as a boon enabling them to indulge in their favourite sport. Another factor which contributed to the unusual lack of holiday hustle on the streets was the need for many of the workers in essential industries to carry on with their work as usual.
