JUDGE'S COMMENT

>IKKCY H KCO.II >IKX DATION fO.C.) NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday. Comment nn the jury's recommendation of mercy was made by Mr. Justice Northcroft in imposing a sentence of nine months' imprisonment with hard labour on Alfred .lames Cunniffe. of Rahotu. farmer, who was found guilty of intent to do grievous bodily harm by discharging a firearm. "Jt is a mercy he did not kill one or the other of his wife or daughter," said his Honor. "I confess I have some difficulty in understanding the recommendation to mercy in favour of a man when the effect of the jury's verdict was that that man has deliberately fired at his wife and daughter with the purpose of shooting them."
