DUTY DEMANDED

TOBACCO FOR TROOPS Rec. 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, this day. Customs duty amounting to £17,000 was demanded on a consignment of pipe tobacco and cigarettes sent to Australian troops at battle stations in Northern Australia by the Australian Comforts Fund. This complaint was made by the honorary secretary of the fund, Mr. C. R. McKerihan, who said that the duty was paid under protest so that the tobacco could reach the men quickly. An appeal is being made to the Prime Minister, Mr. J. Curtin, for a refund of the money.

The Comforts Fund executive considered it unfair to collect Customs duty on goods for the fighting forces which had been bought out of public donations.
