SERVICE APPEALS
POSITION OF FARMERS Dissent from the suggestion that all appeals from military service necessarily arose from an unwillingness to serve, was expressed by the Dominion president of the Farmers' Union, Mr. Mulholland, at yesterday's conference. Because of the close relationship between the farmer and his sons, or even in respect of his employees, he said, there was a marked disinclination to lodge appeals even when no other labour was available. As a result they were approaching a situation where the falling off of essential foodstuffs might even prejudice instead of assist our war effort. The question of appealing for essential men on farms should no longer be left to the individual farmer. Some new method should be decided upon.
