OAK CANDLESTICKS

GIFT MADE TO BISHOP Two oak candlesticks, which were given to Bishop Selwyji a century ago, have been placed on the cltar at St. Mary's Cathedral Church, I'arnell. The bishop brought them to New Zealand in 1542, and as at that time there was feeling among clergy and laity against altar lights, the bishop apparently decided not to use the candlesticks in the church. After he went to England in 186cS, they passed through various hands. They eventually came into the possession of the present Bishop of Auckland, the Right Rev. \V. J. Simkin. who, with the approval of Dean W. Fancourt and cathedral parishioners, placed them on the altar, and dedicated them last Sunday. They will remain tlx;re until it is possible to remove them to the altar of the proposed permanent cathedral.
