GREAT HEADMASTER

RETIRING THIS YEAR MR. ARMOUR, OF WKLLIXGTOX (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. Principal of Wellington College since. 192/. Mr. \\ . A. Armour will on account oi his state or health, retire at the end of this year, when he will complete 46 years' continuous service to the cause of education, 30 of them having been spent in directing successively three large and important secondary schools in the Dominion. His resignation, to take effect from the end of the year, was accepted with regret at a meeting of the board of governors of the Wellington Colleges. It decided to place on record its deep appreciation of the splendid service given not only by Mr. Armour, but by Mrs. Armour, whose activities had been numerous on behalf of the welfare of the school. Under his direction for 12 years, the Napier Boys' High School rapidly advanced to the forefront, and during his 14 years' association with Wellington College he has been closely identified with the prestige of this institution. which has attained a high degree of efficiency and a standing which entitles him to rank as a great headmaster. Born in Dunedin, Mr. Armour, who is G2 years of age, was educated at the Otago Boys' High School and Otago University, where he graduated M.A. (honours) and M.Sc. He represented his school and university at Rugby and the university at cricket. He was an assistant master at the Wanganui Collegiate School from 1902 to 1905 and first assistant at the South School, invercargill, in 1906-07. For the following three years he was an assistant master at the Otago Boys' High School. He was principal of Wanganui Technical College from J912 to 1915, and from 1915 to 1921 was headmaster of the Napier Boys' High School, after which he took up his present appointment. He has been twice president of the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Association.
