DOGS FACE FAMINE
i , 9 NO RATION' MEAT LONDON. Dors and cats arc going hungry in many areas because their only official ration, horsemeat, is unobtainable. In January the street and market stalls disappeared because the bad weather held up distribution. Now supplies are short the stalls have not reopened and horsemeat shops, open for one or two days a week, are sold out in a few hours. Many London pet owners who formerly obtained their animals' food at suburban shops are now queueing in N the City markets, where horsemeat is still available. One of the largest horsemeat dealers of Leadenhall Market told the Sunday Express: "I have to build up my supplies by advertising for sellers instead of buyers. I am selling seven tons of horsemeat a week and serving 0000 customers."
A Ministry of Food official said: "Supplies of animal meat are still about the same. Distribution was held up a few weeks ago and it is probable that wholesalers found a new market locally."
