CO-OPERATIVE PLAN
VEGETABLE GROWING
NEW LYNN COUNCIL'S MOVE
Attention to the serious shortage of vegetables owing to the withdrawal of men from the industry into the armed forces was drawn at last night's meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council by the Mayor, Mr. S. Kickards. He stressed the fact that without some combined effort on the part of citizens the shortage would become more acute in the future. Mr. Rickards added that the ultimate effect on the health of the people might prove very serious and he recommended that some effort should be made, sponsored by the council, to induce the general public to embark on a community vegetable growing effort. The council could assist by placing unused land at the disposal of the community, and in other ways. He also stressed the benefit to be derived from vegetable cultivation on a compost club system. The proposal was supported by the council and the following resolution was passed:— "That this council favours the inauguration of a scheme for the production of vegetables on a co-opera-tive basis, and that the council assists such scheme by placing unused municipal land at the disposal of vegetable growers." A special committee was set up to further the proposals and it was decided to call a public meeting to place the matter before the residents of the borough.
