UNDER NAZI HEEL
RESISTANCE BY FRENCH FREE LEADER'S COMMENT (0.C.) INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. "I do not consider that the present French Government is a true expression of the French people, and I class as traitors to the nations the present leaders who are tending toward collaboration with the Germans," said M. Henri Soutot, Free French Governor of New Caledonia, during a visit to Invercargill. M. Sautot said the strategic importance of New Caledonia in the South Pacific was freely recognised even before the entry of Japan into the war. General de Gauile had, therefore. been very pleased when the islanders pledged their support to the Free French forces. The people were absolutely loyal to the movement. "I trust absolutely the French people who are now under the heel of German oppression, and am sure that they are resisting to the best of their ability. I feel certain thev would wish to help the Allies and would welcome British intervention on French soil," he added.
