ABSENT MINERS

MINISTER'S WARNING

TO YOUNGER WORKERS

Any men withheld from military service on account of their essential work who were guilty of unreasonable absence from work would find themselves dealt with under the Emergency Regulations, declared the Minister of Mines, Mr. Webb, commenting in an interview on absenteeism in coal mining. Me would not hesitate to put those regulations into operation. Mr. Webb was speaking particularly with regard to the younger miners. He said that absenteeism had always been a problem in coalmining, as the workers were particularly susceptible to seasonal ailments because of the nature of their work. Many miners, too, were of advanced age and felt the strain of putting out nearly ten tons of coal a day. Mr. Webb declared, as an offset to the reports of absenteeism, that the miners were doing a better job now than at any period in mining history in New Zealand.
