MELBOURNE CUP TO BE RUN ON A SATURDAY
CANBERRA, May 26. Objections by sportsmen to holding the Melbourne Cup on other than the traditional first Tuesday in November were condemned to-day by the Prime Minister, Mr. J. Curtin. The Victoria Racing Club authorities had Just decided that this year's Melbourne Cup should be run on Saturday, November 7, owing to the ban on racing on week-days, the Derby being fixed for the previous Saturday, Octobcr 31. Mr. Curtin said racing folk did not hesitate to postpone the running of the Melbourne Cup to another date because the course was inundated on the traditional Tuesday a few years ago. He added: "The threatened invasion of this Continent seems to me much more vital a matter than a deluge. I sincerely hope that whatever sporting events Australians are contemplating for next November will not distract men from working for and serving their country ln its hour of need."
