GALE IN TARANAKI
SOME BUILDINGS COLLAPSE
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. A wintry gale that caused widespread damage swept North Taranaki last night. Following a heavy fall of snow on Mount Egniont at the week-end, which left the mountain with its first thick coat of the winter, the wind was icy cold. It was so strong that several buildings collapsed and at least one house lost its roof. Trees were blown down, fine tall Norfolk pine falling across power lines, and many windows were blown in. At one New Plymouth timber company's yards a new building in the course of erection was flattened. Damage of a minor nature was done in gardens. TAIHAPE AND WAIOURU ' (P.A.) WANGANUI. Tuesday. The first snowfall of the winter has been expei ienced in the Taihape district and on the Waiouru Plains. The fall on the plains was about six inches. There was a slight fall in Taihape district this morning, when the hills surrounding the town were covered. The temperature at nine o'clock this morning was :>!) degrees.
