U-BOAT PAYS
Sinking Reported Off The Coast Of Brazil ACTION BY BOMBERS Rec. 2 p.m. LONDON, May 25. The correspondent of the Associated Press at Fort Aleza, Brazil, reports that a North American patrol plane sank a submarine off the north* east coast of Brazil on Saturday. The United Press adds that when the patrol bomber sighted the submarine it dropped bombs. The U-boat replied with anti-aircraft fire, whereupon a second patrol bomber arrived and sank the submarine. A Rie de Janeiro message says the Government announced that the 5000-ton Brazilian freighter, Commandante Lyra, was torpedoed 180 miles off the north-eastern Brazilian coast on May 18 but was not sunk. There was no loss of life. It was the seventh Brazilian ship to be attacked. The United States Navy Department announced that a large United States ship and a medium-sized vessel and a Dutch medium-sized freighter were torpedoed and sunk in the Caribbean area some weeks ago. The survivors were landed at an East Coast port.
