MT. ROSKILL ROAD BOARD
THANKED BV KATEPAYKRS At the annual meeting of ratepayers in the board's district there was a small attendance. The chairman, Mr. C. M.'McCullough, presided. The report stated that there had been a marked increase in buildings, the total value for the year being £86,230, an increase of £18,905 over-the previous year. Of this amount £H3,46t; represented new dwellings as against £47,118 during the previous year. These figures do not include State houses, of which a large number have been erected. The board's programme of public works has been carried out within the limits of the restrictions imposed by shortage of materials and labour, but all parts of the district have received attention whenever possible. Valuable additions have been made to the board's plant, which has been maintained in an efficient manner. On the financial side, at the commencement of the present year the position is eminently satisfactory, and any great fluctuations in the rating incidence is not anticipated. The rate collections representing 95 per cent of the amount struck established a record. Receipts totalled £51,061 and expenditure £49,983, leaving a credit balance in general account of £1078. The report expresses appreciation of the work of the staff. Special mention is made of the services of members of the board as block wardens and also the assistance of the team workers. The meeting accorded a vote of thanks to the board for their untiring efforts in the interests of ratepayers. ONEHUXGA BOROUGH COUNCIIj The monthly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last evening, the deputy-Mayor, Mr. F. Gilchrist, presiding. United Orphanages Appeal.—Permission to hold a street collection on Friday. September 25, was granted. B*l4l era In Hospital.—The council decid»d to support the contention of the Wai*emata County Council that the cost incurred by hosoit.il boairis in attending sick and wounded soldiers should be a direct charge on the war expenses account. Hospital Levy.—The Waikato Hospital Board forwarded m resolution suggesting that the Hospital Boards' Association be asked to arrange a conference of representatives of the classes 1 and 2 hospital boards and the Municipal and Counties' Associations, to discuss the incidence of hospital taxation. The council agreed with the resolution. Museum Election. —Mrs. M. Newton was nominated as one of three representatives of local bodies on the Auckland Institute ond Museum, at the election to be held on June 12. Beading Prorresa. —During the past month permits to the value of £ 1605 nave been issued. For the year ended March 31 permits amounted to £30,641. In addition State houses to the value of £81 400 have been erected in the borough.
